In contrast to JPG files, which are compressed using compression methods, PNG files are compressed using lossless compression, resulting in a flawless image. Until the JPEG format became the default format, PNG was the most popular file format on the internet. If you’re saving a new file as a PNG, make sure to choose Export As. After that, the saving process for all other image formats was transferred to the Export menu. The GIMP development team specified that the ‘Save’ command should be used in GIMP’s native file format, XCF.
In the Export dialog box, set the file type to PNG, select a location for the file, and click Export.
To save a GIMP file as a high resolution PNG, open the file in GIMP and select File > Export.
